05/ 07/ 03 St. Louis University Moo@SLU Art Design Competition

Emily O'Keefe, a sophomore chemistry major in the college of Arts and Sciences at Saint Louis University, has been announced as winner of the MOO@SLU 2003 Art Design Competition.

Emily's design was selected from more than 20 designs submitted by members of the Saint Louis University community. These designs were then narrowed down to a group of five finalists that were posted online to be voted upon by the SLU community.

1,300 votes were submitted, ultimately selecting Emily's cow concept entitled "Saint Louis University in Stained Glass."

In describing her design, Emily stated, "Overall, it relates to the theme of school spirit, showing pride in our campus, with the stained glass motif symbolizing the way in which life here is influenced by Jesuit values."

The windows of St. Francis Xavier College Church, a prominent landmark on SLU's campus, inspired Emily's stained glass concept.

As the winner of the competition, Emily will now execute her design on the actual SLU bovine, a 95" long x 29" wide x 57" high fiberglass cow donated to the University by "Cows on Parade Chicago," a public art exhibition which has been the rage worldwide.

"We look forward to seeing Emily's design in its final form," said Lawrence Biondi, S.J., University President and sponsor of the contest. "This contest has allowed members of our University community to express their creativity in a unique way, while also making an artistic statement about the overall SLU experience."

Emily will finish implementing her design over the summer, with plans for the finished piece to be unveiled at the grand reopening of the campus' newly renovated student union, the Busch Student Center, in September. The cow, the only remaining untouched piece from "Cows on Parade Chicago" made its trek to St. Louis thanks to a gift-in-kind from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.
